A rare type of cancer that originates in the body’s soft tissues, which include muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and linings of the joints.
Symptoms
- A lump in some part of the body
- Swelling (edema) can occur in areas where tumors push up against lymph vessels
- Tumors near the skin can damage the skin, causing open sores (ulceration)
Causes
- Risk factors include inherited gene mutations.
- Prior radiation therapy can increase risk.
- Exposure to certain chemicals may be a risk factor.
- Weakened immune system can elevate risk for some types.
Prevention
- Limited ways to prevent due to unknown causes in many cases.
- Avoid known risk factors like radiation when possible.
- Limited evidence on some chemicals, but avoiding herbicides and arsenic is generally recommended.
- Consult a doctor about genetic testing if family history suggests risk.
